SIWIKE tools : The company you keep

“You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” -Jim Rohn

While not a “tool” in the traditional sense, taking a look at who you spend time with can be game changing when it comes to career and life success. If everyone around you is studying hard in school and at the same time making time to ob search, guess what you’re likely to do? If everyone around you is partying and playing video games, Guess what you’re likely to do? If everyone around you is starting side hustles businesses and making a little money in their spare time, guess what you’re likely to do?

That doesn’t mean that the people that you hang around are your destiny. It does make it easier if they are aligned with your same goals.

So what you want to do is take an audit of the people that you spend the most time with. Do they exhibit behaviours that you want to be living in your life? If not then how could you spend an hour less with them and an hour more with someone who is doing what you want to be doing? And increase that an hour at a time until you’re spending most of your time with the people you aspire to be like.

If you don’t know anyone with behaviours you aspire to have, then this might be your opportunity to explore. Ask the people you know who they know that exhibit those behaviours. Join clubs or interest groups that might be more likely to have those folks. If you want to explore your entrepreneurial tendencies and join a start-up club or mastermind. If you want to be a better public speaker then join a public speaking association. If you want to study more then find a study group.

Whatever you aspire to do, there are likely people around that want that too. Points the main point is to be purposeful with the people you associate with. Success is easier with like-minded people helping each other out!
